(Pictured above: Valor, Sugar, Sochi, Bell, Trouble, Sassy) We love this picture and the Girls in it although a couple of them now bring joy to new families.
Below you'll notice letters preceding the registered names of our girls. We spend our summer months involved in running our dogs in events called Hunt Tests. With each pass or qualifying score we begin earning those letters (titles) and bring home ribbons.
We were introduced to this world of Hunt Tests when Sugar was in training. They recognized her talent soon after we dropped her off. We went to watch her and we enjoyed it so much that we were immediately hooked! Now I handle most of the girls myself with plenty of room to improve. I must be getting better though, the girls and I went 11 for 12 in 2017. I know there's a lot more to it then meets the eye and I have a great deal more to learn.
We also recognized that running Hunt Test, winning ribbons and earning titles would also be a great indicator of intelligence and train-ability of our dogs. .
Following is a description of titles.
The Hunting Retriever Club, Inc. and the United Kennel Club, Inc. are providing a program to develop the hunting retriever to fulfill its intended purpose in life - hunting. These two organizations, working closely together, providing hunters and hunting retrievers a series of actual hunting tests in a controlled environment working toward titles granted by UKC.
Started Hunting Retriever (SHR),
Hunting Retriever (HR),
Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH),
Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH)
American Kennel Club (AKC) also have Hunt Test and we have begun running a couple of our Finished dogs. HRCH Whiskey Raider's Sugar and more recently HRCH Whiskey Raiders Sochi Bear.
When a dog earns a Qualifying Score (pass) they earn ribbons and points and just like the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) titles as follows.... also follows their registered name.
Junior Hunter (JR)
Senior Hunter (SR)
Master Hunter (MH)
Master National Retriever (MHR)
Lots of running opportunities just about every weekend during the summer.
HRCH Whiskey Raiders Sugar - "Sug"
Sugar has a modest pedigree but you would never know it. We really didn't know a whole lot about what to look for when we found her, but boy did we get lucky!
She comes from pointing lines. Her pedigree includes 2001's US Open Pheasant Champion GMPR MHR Rik's Risky Raider (APLA Hall of Fame).
Sug is small in stature, weighing in at 55 lbs. What she lacks in size she makes up for with intelligence and her incredible nose. She is built for endurance and has unbelievable drive. She never runs out of "GO" and when you get her out of the truck YOU better be ready to hunt! Sugar's not only a terror in the upland field, catching pheasants out of the air before a year old, she's also a great water dog. There's no water too cold or mark too far! Her ability with multiple marks is incredible weather in a cornfield or slough. She does have a off switch and at the end of the day afield she loves to crawl up in my chair with me to nap.

HRCH Whiskey Raider's Sochi Bear - "Soch"
Whiskey Raiders Sochi Bear "Sochi" was the very first puppy Whelped by what has become Big Cottonwood Retrievers. She was born during the Winter Olympics in Russia. She's big, white and very athletic. Even though she lost a eye at 10 weeks old, you'd never know it. She's the best blind running dog I have, no pun intended!!! She's a real team player, extremely trainable and can go all day.
She's equally at home quartering a CRP field as she is sitting quietly in the goose pit. She even brought home a check from the first and only BDC event we ever entered. She earned her Championship title in May of 2019!
Watch for her appearance in Long Hollow Outdoors T.V. Airing on the Hunt Channel 2019.

SHR Trooper's Lil' Shot of Whiskey - "T-Rub"
"Trouble" is from Sugar's second litter. We kicked ourselves for not originally keeping her so, when given the opportunity to get this little girl back we jumped all over it! The "lucky" streak continues! We feel it was meant to be... a week after bringing her home we received word that her Sire, HRCH Flatlander's Layin' Down The Law, lost his life. "Trooper" himself was one Grand Pass away from His GRHRCH and his blood lines include 2011 NFC FC AFC Cody Cut A Lean Grade, FC AFC Code Blue, FC AFC Hilltop's Hayseed & 2XNAFC 2XCNFC FC AFC Ebonstar Lean Mac. When breeding to Troop I didn't really realize what a strong pedigree he had and his daughter Trouble shows promise and definitely has his easy going attitude and willingness to please. She's a happy dog!

Valor is Our "Old School Girl".
When I heard about her litter, I immediately knew I would want one of these pups! It's pretty common to find 2XNAFC 2XCNAFC FC CFC Ebonstar Lean Mac in many dogs pedigree but it's usually 5 or 6 generations back.
Val is out of 8 X GRHRCH UH McMac Magic Eye's A'smilin MH "O'Malley" & GRHRCH AR King's Magical One MH. O'Malley is directly out of Lean Mac. Which mean we have a Granddaughter of one the best ever!
It will be interesting to watch her develop and were are excited to see what becomes of her. Grant and Valor have a strong bond and when she's in the house there's only one place she wants to be! Yep, on his lap. Grant and Valor have a perfect record running 7/7 and will be working hard to keep it that way! She aims to please!

I exercised to much caution when I first saw "Eva's" litter.
But as luck would have it, I got another chance.
Eva's litter mates have accomplished much in three short years!!!
Her litter mates out of (2014 NAFC FC AFC Texas Troubadour "Tubbs" and 6X GRHRCH Leitner Farms Land Shark MH MNH4 HOF QAA "Jaws")
GRHRCH Tubb's N Jaw's Candy Bar MH "Reese"
1 Master National Pass

HRCH Etched In Stone Something Royal MH "Mason"
HRCH Pepper Box Loose Cannon Of Hyannis "Loosey"
HRCH Tubb's Southern Song "Dixie"
We are very excited to have Eva join us here at BCR and She wasted no time carving out a spot on the coach unless my lap is empty. She wants to go wherever I go!
We will be doing our best to finish up her Finished Title this Hunt Test season as She needs 3 more passes.
Big Cottonwood's Lil' Gunslinger- " Pistol"
We had a different name all picked out, but after spending a few days with this little "Pistol" it was just much more fitting! She is something else!
Pistol is sired by GRHRCH Fowlmasters Big Black Buck MH12
& HRCH Blue Sky's Fully Involved "Ash" MH. But her loaded pedigree goes even further. Grand Sire is SRSCH 15xGRHRCH
Big Black Dude II MNH4, no other dog in history has as many Grand Passes. Looking at the bottom side of her pedigree you'll find three BIG names including 2011 NFC FC Watermark's Running Back MH "Emmitt", 2006 NAFC FC AFC Carbon Copy of Horn Creek (2008 Hall Of Fame) and 2003 NFC FC AFC Five Star General Patton.
I realized that I can't always rely on my good luck to find a good dog!
Pistol is maturing and is turning into a very nice dog. She's coming along nicely in training and is picking up concepts quickly.

SHR Big Cottonwood's Frost Advisory- "Chilli"
Go to www.huntinglabpedigree.com/Pedigree.asp?id=117506 for full pedigree.
In these parts when you hear the name "Dice" you pay attention! Dice is very well known for producing some very good hunting dogs. He Himself was Grand Hunting Retriever Champion! Many of his offspring also play the Retriever Games and at the highest levels ie; 4x GRHRCH DRAKE MH! We have high hopes for our Chilli Dog! She's from our 2017 Dice/Trouble litter the "Tenacious Ten".
Chilli has some fine attributes like drive and good looks but I believe her biddable attitude and intelligence are at the top of her list. When she hears gunshots she goes looking.
Her litter-mate "BCR's Long Hollow Snapshot "Canon" owned by Ryan Fortier of Long Hollow Retrievers will be featured on Ryan's T.V. show airing Fall 2019. Canon has impressed a guy that's not easily impressed!
Chilli spent a good deal of time this winter with Ryan going through her basics. She's home now and we're busy training her to handle with whistle and hand signals. Chilli ran 4/4 to earn her Started title and I'm hopeful there will be another title by Summers end.

Big Cottonwood's Storm Warning - "Twister"
Here we go again trying to pick a name and it took a good two weeks for it to come to us! Twister you might ask??? Yep, She's wound tight!!! We weren't convinced that we had made the right decision for another two weeks. This dog as GO GO GO!!!
Her Sire "Trig" is of course a Grand Hunting Retriever Champion and Master Hunter and is out of one of the best, 2011 NAFC FC AFC Cody Cut A Lean Grade & HRCH Fairwinds Bayou Boogie Woogie MH QAA.
I'm over the initial shock of a puppy with this much giddy-up and I am happy with how quickly she learns. When I command "sit" her butt its the ground first! She promises to be something special!!!

Big Cottonwood's Code Of The West - "Howdy"
Howdy's Sire is none other than 2011 NAFC FC AFC Cody Cut A Lean Grade "Grady" . You might have heard of him as he has sired nearly 300 titled dogs. I've been blessed to have a couple girls with "Grady" in their pedigree but, as a Grandfather. I don't think you can go wrong with a Grady Pup! If you haven't......try one!
Mom's not bad either! HRCH Rainmaker's Lady A MH "Ava". She's loaded with;
FC AFC KPR's Wet Willie
HR Ragin' River Roxx MH QA2
FC AFC Esprit's Power Play
FC AFC Texanna Yellow Gold MH
FC AFC Wood River's Franchise
FC AFC Flyway's Ruby B. Gonia
Howdy has such a nice temperament and is already well traveled. House and Crate trained by ten weeks.
